Memories of Stanmore - Matthew Waldin
My name is Matthew Waldin (1967), son of David John Waldin (and Merle, neé Cook) who taught at Stanmore (I was at Stanmore School from 1975-1977 and was born at 38 Stanmore Lane no less).
My elder sister Patience (1965) also went to Stanmore. In the photo [of Nigel Sacree’s memories] person No. 42 could not have been my father as he was in Africa fighting Rommel (Dad was born 22 April 1922). He was one of four kids. His elder brother Peter was in Canada. The person in the photo–if a Waldin–could have been my dad's sister Jean or more probably as 42 is a boy it was the youngest sibling, Howard Waldin (who lived in Twyford and became an architect). Hope this helps.

Memories of Stanmore - Neil Fisher
Here is a photo of my own that I found from my days in Stanmore Infants. I think this would have been in 1966. The concrete horse was in the infants playground then.
The names that I can remember are as follows: Back left to right; unknown, Greg Smith (I think), John Ashurst (his father Jake Ashurst was the Headmaster of Peter Symonds Grammar School in those days - a character, who also taught me Latin for two years), Wayne Curzon, Jeremy Vale, Brian Bowers. Front row left to right; Diane Gibson, Louise Tatton (I think), Julie Colenutt, Neil Fisher, Alison Merwood.
I can remember a few teachers; I think I started in Mrs Cavell's class and was also in Miss Swift and Miss Percival's class too in the infants. In the Juniors, I was in Mrs Blake's class, Mrs EG Green and Miss J Green and then Mr Hartnell. I can also remember Mrs Brown too as she taught us some very basic French before we left for secondary school. I can also remember being in the school play too, which was called The Pig in the Palace. I played the King.

Lovely friendly school. Playing recorder in Mr Waldrin’s class. Doing a project on Winchester and we visited exciting places. Playing netball for school. The frozen milk which I didn’t drink. Sports Day - such fun. The Fetes out on the front lawn.

Seeing the wonderful performances by the children reminded me of taking part in concerts as part of the choir, led by Mr Waldin.
Also taking part in the nativity play. My friend Janet had long blonde hair, so was an angel, but I was only a shepherd and wore a tea towel on my head!!

Miss Glover (bless her!), Mrs Cooper, Miss Brown. Learned so much doing The Winchester Stud in my final term here. I recall learning and performing the Daniel Jazz which was quite progressive for its time. This school even taught me to read music. A great foundation for the rest of my life.

My memories are having outside toilets, going over to the dining room and having our lunches. When it was cold and the pipes had frozen we had a day off.
Feeding the cows in the fields around the school. Stanmore was a very lovely school to be at. Teachers I remember - Mr Hammond, Headteacher; Miss Clarke; Mrs Percival; Miss Brown and Mrs Swift who wore sandals with socks - she was scary.

I enjoyed the school meals, especially chocolate sponge pudding and mint green gorgeous custard. I remember Mr King and Mr Hammond giving me the cane for laughing because other boys had just had the cane. Also tracing paper loo roll in the outside toilets and the smell of carbolic soap.

Memories of Stanmore - Mandy Dodd (nee Holder) - 1967
I am a ex-pupil of Stanmore primary I spent many wonderful years through my younger years. My two girls came to Stanmore and so has my granddaughter. My name when I went there was Mandy Holder, my three sisters and brother also came to Stanmore, so did my late father who also was Father Christmas one year.
I started working in the school in about 1989 as a catering assistant working in the old kitchen, working ten hours a week as a catering assistant. I am now working at Stanmore as the unit manager of the kitchen for hc3s. I have only had three years out of Stanmore, I came back and was then a unit supervisor, then promoted to a unit manager. I also cook for St Faiths primary from Stanmore. The school has changed over the years.
I enjoyed my time as a pupil there, now I am enjoying my time cooking healthy meals for the children.
I love working with the staff at the school.
