Grow a Pound week

Grow a Pound

This week year 5 and 6 became entrepreneurs and created their own business’. After getting into groups the children bought in a pound each and devised their own products to sell. They needed to work out the cost of all the resources, market their ideas and work out the profit they may make. The final steps were to make their product and then set up their stall.

The culmination of this event was the chance for all the other year groups to come and purchase the range of goods on offer. These included fidget toys, cupcakes, lemonade and bracelets. The three yr 5 6 classes were fantastic all week and showed themselves to be excellent potential businessmen and woman as they raised a grand total of £172. The children will be voting on the charity they want to choose to donate the profits to, with a little left over as a treat for the classes. Well done Year 5 and 6!

Jubilee Celebrations

Jubilee Breakfast

Parents and children dressed in Tiaras or Diamonds to attend the Jubilee Breakfast at school. everyone looked fantastic and thoroughly enjoyed their bacon or sausage sandwiches. Thanks to everyone who bought tickets and to the kitchen staff for their early start.

Jubilee Lunch

Children gathered on the school field this lunchtime in house groups to celebrate the Queen’s amazing 70 year reign. We all enjoyed delicious cucumber and coronation chicken sandwiches and the whole school looked amazing in their red, white and blue. Thanks again to Mandy and the kitchen staff and to Mr Foard for helping sort all the tables.

Cricket

The school Cricket competed in a tournament this week at St Cross Cricket Ground. We were up against stiff competition and even though it was our first ever match we still managed to win one of our games. Staff were really proud of how the children behaved; they managed to combine a competitive edge with a great attitude (particularly with the heavy rain showers)..

Year 3 and 4

Yesterday we went on our amazing walk up St Catherine’s Hill! We were relieved that the weather was pleasant. We were also really pleased by how so many of you made it up all of the 331 steps to get to the top! Thank goodness we had some tasty snacks in our picnic bags to enjoy when we got there!

It was great that so many of you could join us!

Super Science at Stanmore

Year 5 and 6

This week in science we explored filtering and dissolving; conducting our own experiments with mixtures and solutions. The children showed their understanding of a fair test and looked at different variables. Things did get a little messy…..

Year 3 and 4

This half term, the children in Year 3 and 4 are learning about developing shades, tones and tints in their painting. They are learning to mix secondary and tertiary colours and develop them further by adding black and white paints. They will be using these skills to create a monochromatic painting of an image inspired by the South Downs artist, Mark Greco.

SATS are over!

Year 6

A huge well done for our yr6 cohort this week completing all their SATS test. We were all so impressed with their mature attitude and their resilience throughout the week. Thanks so much to the kitchen as well for the delicious breakfasts. The children celebrated on Friday afternoon with a visit from our local ice cream van. and luckily the sun appeared just in time. Thank you to the FoS for their support.

Year 5 and 6

Year 5 and 6 have been expert scientists this week investigating mixtures and solutions and how to separate them. The children then tested their filtering systems outside, using a bucket of muddy water, to investigate which materials helped to sieve out the dirt and purified the water. We all decided we still wouldn’t drink the ‘clean’ water!

Enjoying the sunshine

Year 2

This week we have carried on exploring plants and in our science looked at the difference between wild and garden plants. We went on a hunt around the school to see what we could find and we're surprised by the amount of plant life we have around our school site. We found lots of wild flowers including eyebright and speedwell, plants hidden in the grass, and also some wild strawberries. We are hoping for some strawberries to grow from them. The children then came back to class and dissected a flower to help identify all the different parts and then wrote what those parts are for.

Year 5 and 6

YR 6 took their Maths revision outside today and enjoyed the sunshine! Year 5 and 6 also enjoyed music lessons this week, playing the double harmonic scale which features in Arabic music. We played the notes: C Db E F G Ab B C.

Welcome back to the Summer Term

Year 2

This week Mr Reads writing group started the week by doing some gardening. This was to help inspire our writing for the next few weeks where we will be looking at the book "Curious Garden" by Peter Brown. Our first writing task was to think about our gardening and how we could use our senses to describe the experience. The group have written some great recounts as a result of their experience.

We tidied up the raised beds in the outdoor classroom and planted some new flowers in the house team colours. See the before and after pictures of the raised beds.

Year 3 and 4

Yr 3 and 4 are starting a new book this term - Leon and the Place in between - and to start the text the children took part in circus skill training. There was skipping, hula hooping and even an attempt at juggling!

Year 5 and 6

In Science this week Year 5 and 6 started their new topic - Material and changes in properties. The children took part in an experiment this week to test whether mysterious objects were magnetic, permeable, rigid or transparent. This will help us with our final outcome where we have to design a new clothing range for an outdoor clothing company - keep an eye on the shops!

We also started a new text (The Boy in the Tower) and arrived in our English lessons to discover we had been taken over by pernicious vines and plants! The children discussed how the plants might behave and made decisions about what they would pack should disaster strike!

Plays and performances

Year 1 and 2

Year 1/2 has been learning the recorder this half term and were able to perform to parents and carers this morning. They played a number of songs including a boogie and finishing with baby shark. They have worked really hard on their music and the music teacher was very impressed with their progress.

Year 3 and 4

Year 3 and 4 performed in our Spring Assembly this week.

They spoke with confidence in front of an audience for the first time since COVID closures. There were more than 100 adults who came to watch our performances - it was so great to have so many people join us in school again!

This week was time for our second ever performance of our Beyond The Beat musicians. Wind, strings and brass instruments all delighted the audience by how much progress they had made! We were also joined by some expert musicians from Hampshire Music Service as well as from Kings School and Westgate School.

Year 5 and 6

To end our Evolution topic, we studied a range of fossils. We were each given a different fossil; from it, we had to determine what the creature could have looked it, its diet and what its habitat might have been. We also discussed how fossils support the theory of evolution.

Jubilee Planting

Sweet peas and sunflowers

To celebrate the Queen's Platinum Jubilee, we will be creating a 'Jubilee Garden' located outside Acorns. Each child and member of staff at school is invited to plant a specially commissioned Jubilee sweet pea seed, as well as range of sunflower seeds, which will create s stunning display . We will also be planting a wild flower border around our Jubilee tree (planted as part of the Green Canopy scheme) on the front field. A special blend of wildflower seeds has been created for the Jubilee, with a red, white and blue theme. We can't wait to see them bloom!

Litter Picking

To demonstrate our Key value of 'Respect', we have participated in the 'The Great Big Schools Clean with Keep Britain Tidy' campaign, which was launched this week. We enjoyed a live lesson featuring a children's author, Sarah Roberts, who read her book, 'Somebody Crunched Colin'. Each class took part in litter picking in the school grounds with our new litter-pickers. It was astonishing how much rubbish we collected! Children are reminding themselves to dispose of their litter carefully to show respect to the school grounds as well as to the environment.

Exploring Light

The Tempest

Year 4 5 and 6 were lucky enough to welcome the Young Shakespeare Company into school again for a production of The Tempest. The children were able to actively participate and were introduced to the rich language of William Shakespeare.

Year 3 and 4

In Science we are working on light, and we are improving our working scientifically skills by carrying out a variety of investigations. This week we were investigating the thickness of materials and how opaque they are.

We have also been looking at shadows: how they are created and how they change.

Year 5 and 6

This week, it was Aspen’s’ turn to explore how birds beaks have evolved and changed due to where they live and what they eat. The children loved picking up the various objects with different utensils and were able to use that information to describe which birds may live in different habitats.
