Marvellous maths and more

Speak

Our fabulous school council SPEAK met this week and discussed what was going well this term. The children reported that playtimes were fabulous due to the zoned areas and they really appreciated the support of the Y6 playtime leaders.

Year 3 are studying friendship in PHSE and used a wool circle to discuss what the qualities a strong friendship were to them

Maple

Maple class have been learning all about the late Queen's coronation and comparing it to the King's. We looked at the differences and similarities and made our own crowns and sceptres. Yr1 have been exploring the part part whole model and YR have been matching a variety of items, such as leaves, buttons, socks and thimbles.

Rowan

Rowan class have been studying famous still life artists this week. We set up a gallery in the classroom and the children visited the 'art gallery'. We discussed what we liked and didn't like about certain pieces of art and then chose our favourite piece to recreate in a medium of our choice.

Birch

Children in Birch Class have been learning to add tens across a hundred boundary in maths, which involves an exchange of ten 10s for a hundred. So that the children fully understand, they have been using the Base 10 equipment to show how the exchanges are made. This is crucial for their understanding of addition (and subtraction) as they continue on their maths learning journey through the school.

Sycamore

Outdoor learning

This half term we have enjoyed lots of activities outside. Building dens, swings and bows and arrows in Forest School. Improving our dribbling and passing skills to make us like England's Lions and Lionesses. As well as taking part in our Longitudinal study about making observations about how the school grounds change over the year.

Aspen

In History, we have been putting our Shang Dynasty knowledge to use. This week, we were looking at how the Shang excelled in bronze handicraft and produced richly detailed objects. Bronze was a symbol of power and commanding respect. With our knowledge, we created knowledge organisers to display our understanding.

Oak

Oak Class have been becoming their own archaeologists ahead of our trip next week examining the Kingdom of Benin. We have looked at different plaques from the Kingdom of Benin what stories they tell us.

Our Wonderful Week

Maple Class

In Maple class the children have been exploring the idea of long ago, using vocabulary such as then, later and years ago. Grandad Pony sent a treasure chest into school full of items from the Victorian years, including a handmade rug, an old pocket watch and even a chamber pot! We also spent time looking at old party games and writing rules so we can play them at Onion's birthday.

Rowan

Rowan class have been diving into their history topic and have been looking at the lives and impact of significant explorers. We have looked at some of the early explorers and will be looking at Neil Armstrong next week!

Birch

In science,  Birch Class has been learning to predict using prior knowledge. Drawing on our work last week on the nutrients required for a balanced diet, the children predicted which foods were the fattiest from a group of 8, and ordered them from those with the most fat to those with the least. There were some surprises in the outcomes as several children predicted that vegetable crisps would be lower in fat, but they were the highest!

Sycamore

This week in Sycamore Class we have been learning to round numbers to the nearest 10, 100 and 1,000. We have used number lines to help.

Aspen

This week, we have been working on counter balances in gymnastics.  To ensure we kept ourselves safe, coordination and communication with our partners were key. We had to choose three balances, and create a sequence with a movement inbetween.

Winchester College

Winchester College supported pupils at Stanmore School with enrichment clubs on Wednesday afternoon, Children across both key stages have the opportunity to learn Spanish and finesse their skills at chess.

Welcome home year 6

Rowan

Rowan have been adventurous with their art this week. We tried printmaking using clay. We each had a ball of clay which the children imprinted a pattern into. They then rolled paint onto the clay and pressed it down onto the paper to create some lovely patterns!

Birch

Our focus in art this week has been learning about mixing tertiary colours. The children used watercolours to create a new palette, which they will be working on later in the unit to create work with complementary and analogous colours.

Sycamore

This week Sycamore Class have been learning about how the Geography of Britain helped or hindered potential invaders.

One the one hand, this is a hard country to invade because it is an island. But on the other hand, there are lots of quiet coves that invaders, such as the Vikings, could use to sneak up on others!

Aspen

This week in Aspen, we have been getting musical! Using the piece of music called  “A Bao A Qu”, which is featured in the BBC Ten Pieces, we created our own class beast.  With our class beast, we used a range of untuned percussion instruments to play sounds that could link to how our beast moves.

Year 6

Year 6 have had a fantastic weeks residential and has shown all the keys to success, in particular resilience. We are very proud of them all and have sent them home happy but tired!

Our enriching curriculum

Maple Class

Maple class have been enjoying the cooler weather and bug hunting. We found spiders, woodlice and even a giant millipede. In year 1 we have been looking at counting back from ten in 4 different language - English, French, Spanish and Australian!

Rowan

The children in Rowan had their first Listen 2 Me lesson today with the Hampshire Music service. They will be learning to play the ukulele over the term, and I am already looking forward to seeing them perform in their concert at the end. They loved it!

Birch

In Birch Class, we have been learning about what life was like in the Stone Age. We learned about where people lived, what they ate and the tools that they used. We thought about how these things changed through the three periods of the Stone Age and why that might be. We learned that the Stone Age people started as hunter gatherers and evolved to become farmers, training animals to help them.

Sycamore

Sycamore are lucky enough to be the first class to take part in Forest School for this year. We have been back in the mud kitchen, creating delicious recipes, this week we set a fire to make charcoal to make our own pencils and of course, there was the slack line and den building.

Aspen

The Prodigal Son

This week in RE we have looking at the theme of justice, and if Christian's believe God is just. Using the parable, The prodigal Son, we explored the theme of justice by using a conscience alley. Many of us thought that it was unjust for the son to be welcomed home as he had spent all the family's money but was given a party whilst his older brother worked tirelessly without a reward.  However, some of us recognised that the father forgave the son as he loved him. We realised that this parable shows how God waits for humans to realise what they have done wrong and ask for forgiveness.

Oak

Oak class have been creating cityscapes to painting in monochromatic colour scheme. They needed to apply their knowledge of tint, tone and shade to achieve their objective.

Elm

In Elm Class, we have used our empathy skills , imaging what it would be like to go back in time as the main character in our key text 'The night at the Frost Fair.' We enjoyed using our senses to visualize being on the frozen London Thames and eating warm, crunchy gingerbread from one of the sellers stalls and all of the antics of an 1800s Frost Fair.

After a busy week completing two of our English outcomes, to an egg-celent standard! The children in Elm class, hatched a plan during their brain break, to create a device that can keep a raw egg intact when dropped from a height.

WELCOME BACK

Maple Class

Yr 1 have settled brilliantly back into school and have bene working hard on their new topic. We have looked at objects from the last 100 years and spent time ordering some funny photos of Mrs Atkins on a timeline. We also went into the woods and made our very own journey sticks.

YR had their first full day at school on Friday and they spent the day exploring the new environment. They have worked alongside the Y1 children and have managed to create a car cleaning company as well as build houses, become businessmen and made flower umbrellas.

Rowan

Rowan class had a wonderful time collecting natural materials in different hues of green , using their creativity to turn them into sea creatures; resulting in a spotty octopus and a Merfish!

Aspen

Predicting and Painting!

What a great start to Year 5!

This week, we have been improving our ability to make accurate predictions in English and Guided Reading. Through the use of clues in both pictures and words, we were able to discuss and write our ideas on what could happen in our new texts: The Willow Pattern and The Dam.

In art this week we have mixing primary colours to create tones, shades and tints. With this new knowledge, we will be examining how artists use these in their pictures.

R2L

This week in R2L our target has been "I can understand why there are rules!" The children have shown a fabulous understanding of why we have rules: to keep us safe; to keep others safe; to be fair; to be organised. This was actively practised when the children needed to follow the road signs whilst riding their scooters, as well as playing other games with clear rules. Children also needed to be able to understand the rules when handling Bubbles and Oreo so that the guinea pigs felt safe and calm.

R2L also welcomed Mrs Lee into the team. Mrs Lee will be working alongside Mrs Mason, Mrs Brown and Mrs Barton; the children have really helped to welcome Mrs Lee into the school community.

All of the children have been successful in their classes this week and have produced some top class work!

Well done team R2L

Our Very Busy Week

Maple

Maple class have been really enjoying embarking on their first English learning journey. We have been using the book Beegu as our inspiration and we have been writing letters in role as Beegu to special people in Beegu's life. They have crafted some amazing writing.

Rowan

Bamboo Tamboo!

This week, Rowan class performed in a music concert to their parents. With their Bamboo Tamboo's, they played eight wonderful pieces of music. They all kept to the correct rhythm and tempo, and they also sang a well-known Bob Marley song. We all thought you were outstanding!

Sycamore

This week, Year 4 chose their very best piece of writing over the whole year. They took their time over this to publish them very carefully and I think you’ll agree they look great!

Year 6

The children in Year 6 have been incredibly busy this week. As well as performing in ‘Pirates of the Curry Bean’, they have also been on a school trip to Cameron’s Cottage in the New Forest and taken part in Enterprise day!

At Cameron’s Cottage the children learnt all about the flora, fauna and creatures that live in the forest from an expert naturalist from Winchester College. They enjoyed building dens and catching and identifying insects with very large nets.

Below are just some of the amazing pictures from our trip.

Pictures from Enterprise day.

Reading Festival

Reading Festival

On Monday the children enjoyed a day full of activities based on the book - ‘Leon and the place between’. We were lucky enough to welcome Juggling Jake, who taught the children a range of circus skills, including diablos and the tightrope. The children also use the grounds to make woodland circus theme structures and tried their hand at graffiti. Thank you to all the staff for their help in making this such a great day.

Rowan

To conclude our learning on life cycles, we drew and painted each stage of a Painted Lady's life cycle.  We were able to choose between oil pastels or water colours- many of us chose water colours.

R2L

This week in R2L, our target has been "I can work as part of a team!" We have looked at the qualities necessary to be a good team player and we have enjoyed lots of team building activities, such as, building the tallest tower out of spaghetti and marshmallows as well as team games. We have even designed and made our own team R2L T shirts which we wore during the R2L Olympics! We identified that the four necessary qualities to being a good team player are: the ability to stop and think; the ability to listen; to have confidence in ourselves and each other; to always be kind and encouraging. We also enjoyed the amazing Reading festival and discovered that we have some very talented children with some awesome circus skills!

Year 5 and 6

Year 5 and 6 have been busy practising for the school play, 'Pirates of the curry bean.' Year 5 have been earning about growing and changing in PHSE. To show how much they have learnt, they worked in teams to complete a written relay race!

Celebrating Excellence

Our Excellent children

Performing arts are flourishing at Stanmore primary with our wonderful school ensemble performing on Wednesday evening , the school choir singing beautifully at Winchester Cathedral last week and the Stanmore squad overall winners in the Matilda dance concept show at the Theatre Royal on Sunday.

We are all so proud of our amazing children

Maple

Maple Class have been amazing this week and have become experts in Victorian schooling. They got into groups and created a poster and a presentation about a certain aspect of Victorian school, such as 'punishment', 'equipment', 'the school day', and 'the classroom'. They were amazing and presented their posters and information to the whole class. They spoke clearly and with confidence about their expert area.

Birch

Birch Class have been continuing their work on 'Light and Shadows' and this week, have focused on shadows. We explored how shadows are made, how they can move and change and then went outside to explore making shadows ourselves. Luckily, the sun shone for us!

Sycamore

This week, Sycamore have been enjoying the more creative side to the curriculum. From designing computer programmes, to lino printing in the style of William Morris. This has encapsulated the breadth of the word 'creativity'.

Year 5 and 6

Year 5 and 6 have been busy practising the end of term production. In maths we have been learning all about negative numbers and using figurative language to describe the cave where prisoner 42 has been held for over 1000 years.

In addition, the children have progressed even further in their swimming this week and their confidence and persistence whilst they have been in the water, has been recognised by their swimming coaches, with many children progressing to more advanced swimming groups this week.

Cut, Stitch and Join.

This week, we have been looking at the British significant designer: Cath Kidston.  We looked at her famous use of pattern (floral, spotted and London themed) and how her products fasten. With a paper pattern, we created a bag tag, which we joined using a variety of ways: glue, tape or staples.  We will be sewing our own bag tags next, using a range of fabrics and embellishments to personalise them.

Birch

In Birch Class, we have been continuing with our cricket lessons and this week, have been learning the 'Long Barrier'. The children quickly mastered this skill and used it in an adapted game, focusing on stopping and throwing the ball.

In art, we have been learning about botanical artists and taking inspiration from their work to create a detailed study of a geranium. The children concentrated so well to focus in on the tiny details of the leaves - fantastic!

Sycamore

This week in Sycamore Class, we have been completing a research project for our science unit on electricity. We were learning about lightbulbs, asking questions such as:

Who invented the lightbulb?

What is incandescent light?

What is an LED?

Year 5/6

Oak class have enjoyed French lessons with the French master from Winchester College. This week they were learning to talk about their pets with an entertaining game called ' Stealing Sentences.'

Year 5 and 6 have been inspired by ' Who let the Gods out' by Maz Evans to write crime reports. Unfortuantely, the teachers were making alien soup and added too much salt. The children had to work out how to separate the substances so they could start again making the soup!
