The Grand Opening

Year 6 common room officially opens

Today marked a first for Stanmore Primary School as a new common opened up specifically for the use of year 6 children. The first lunchtime was really successful, with activities including table tennis, jigsaws, table football and hungry frogs (!). The children ate their lunch in there and enjoyed some relaxation time with their peers.

If anyone would like to come in for a lunchtime and either teach the children a new skill or make something with the children then please contact Mrs Atkins or the office. Also if anyone has any spare games, bean bags or craft equipment they would like to donate then they would be gratefully received. The year 5 children are already looking forward to their turn next year.

Birch class

Year 3 had a very creative start to their new book on Tuesday. Inspired by the book, 'The Rock Factory', the children used the instructions in the book to create their own crystals! They followed the instructions carefully, and later evaluated how effective they were. The crystals are starting to arrear on the wool - what a dazzlingly clever class they are!

Yr 5 and 6 Den building

As part of the hook for our new text, the children in year 5 and 6 learnt how to survive in the wild and took to the outside areas to create their own dens. There was lots of creative thinking and team work and although there were some wet children by the end, everyone had a good time. Not sure we would want to sleep in them though!

Forest School

The children have really enjoyed their introductory sessions to Forest School this week. They have explored the environment, made clay and leant how to play in the woods safely. These smiles show how much it was enjoyed - and how messy we got.

Beyond the Beat

Our wonderful musicians joined with the Kings Orchestra to perform their End of Term Performance. 

They demonstrated all of their Keys to Success in order to achieve this. Well done! Everyone was so impressed with how amazing you sounded. Thank you to the King’s students who attended and for Hampshire Music Service for their continued support.

Christmas Lunch

The children enjoyed a fantastic lunch this week, cooked by our excellent kitchen staff. there were crackers, hats and even Christmas music for everyone to enjoy. Thank you to the kitchen staff for your hard work and to all the staff for being excellent waiting elves!

Minstead

Last week Sycamore class enjoyed their residential trip to Minstead. All the children represented Stanmore School beautifully and had an amazing time. It was great to see all the sleepy smiles when they arrived back at school. A big thank you to Miss Evers, Mrs Taylor and Mrs Jones for giving up their time to make sure the children had a trip they will always remember.

Whole School

The children were entranced by the online Christingle , Christ Church recorded online for Stanmore Primary School today. They loved making their own Christingle oranges and understand what all the different elements symbolised.

Rowan

This week we looked at how prey adapt to avoid being captured by predators. We investigated if camouflaging was the most effective adaption by designing two moths; one that would camouflage in with the woodlands and one that wouldn't. The moth predators then had two minutes to find as many moths as they could. Our results showed us that camouflaging was effective, but we also discussed that it wouldn't also prevent prey from being captured. 

Enjoying the Arts

Maple class

Maple class had their first design and technology lesson on Monday where we learnt about shelters and shade and why those things are important! We went on a shelter's scavenger hunt around the school to see what types of shelters we could find.

We have also had some fantastic success solving our class puzzles this week.

Rowan Class

Rowan class took part in their Listen to Me Music concert this week. Thank you to all the families who came to support them. They sounded amazing.

Birch Class

As part of their topic work, Birch class made some amazing clay pots this week, They thought about the design, shape and even patterns.

Oak Class

Oak class have been practicing their arpeggios in their music lesson. Having mastered the glockenspiel we moved on to flute and clarinet!

Elm Class

In Elm class the children have been experimenting with creating molds and cats using cardboard, clay and plaster of paris. We weren’t entirely successful but the children enjoyed using the silicon mold to make small objects.

Jazz band!

The children were entranced by Winchester College Jazz Combo which performed on Wednesday afternoon. Having learnt all about flugelhorns and other brass and wind instruments played, they clapped along to the up- lifting music.

Kindness

R2L

R2L have been looking at what bullying means this week. They created some odd socks to show that although we may be different on the outside, we are all the same inside. They have also painted some kindness stones and hidden them around the school - I wonder who will find them!

Year 2

Year 2 have been exploring the properties of 2D shapes in maths this week and have loved using the Geo Boards to investigate sides and vertices.

Year 5/6

Year 5/6 are learning to be future mechanical engineers. They looked at the gears on a bike to see that smaller gears rotate more quickly and are easier to turn but do not provide much force. 

 Larger gears rotate more slowly and are harder to turn but provide more force. Gears are used in bicycles to make it easier to cycle uphill and faster to cycle on the flat. We now know to use smaller gears when cycling up Stanmore Lane!

Birch

Year 3 have been working hard at their hockey skills this week and are showing some excellent dribbling using both sides of the stick. They have also been exploring the idea of remembrance and completing some lovely poppy art,

Sycamore

This week we have been creative in our English lessons. Thinking about characters and settings ready for when we create our own Viking Saga's. We had to think about the qualities of a good Viking hero and create an appropriate setting for our quest to take place in.

Yr 6

Year 6 children have been working hard on their maths in lessons and during the school day. Some children have been participating in one to one online tuition and others have been challenged to think about reasoning and problem solving in different ways with Winchester College and in class. Here are some of our children pushing themselves to think in different ways.

Experiments, Maths and Bendy Children

Sycamore

Sycamore Class were experimenting with different types of toothpaste, eggs and vinegar. We now have a very smelly classroom and a burning desire for fish and chips tonight! We can’t wait to see the results of our experiments.

Birch

In Gymastics we have been learning how to hold and extend a dish, arch and front support shape, as well as a japana. The children practiced these skills and then created a short routine showing them off, linked by smooth transitions.

In Maths the children have been learning to add and subtract 3-digit numbers where they need to make an exchange. To do this, they have been using concrete apparatus alongside written methods to demonstrate their understanding.

Our Magnificent Choir

Stanmore Choir showed how wonderful they were this week with a performance in Winchester Cathedral for hundreds of graduates and their family and friends. All the children looked incredible and Winchester University were amazed at how well they sang. They have made everyone at Stanmore very proud - and there may even have been a few wet eyes. Many thanks to Mrs Mitton and Mrs Eagle for their help in school and for Mr Valentine for his coaching sessions.

Birch class

In Science this week, Birch class have been learning all about the human skeleton and have been labelling bones on their own bodies. They even learnt some Hebrew names for the different parts.

Sycamore
